These chemicals are toxic and cause allergies. Some studies connect these chemicals with cancer. They have also shown to have hormone-disrupting qualities by mimicking estrogen and causing problems in the endocrine system.

• Propylene glycol - This chemical derived from petroleum and is a synthetic product. Because it attracts water it is used in cosmetics as a surfactant, solvent and humectant. It is used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and as a carrier in fragrance oils. It is also used in antifreeze and hydraulic brake fluid. It is toxic and causes allergic reactions. • Sodium laurel, lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) - Is a white powder used in thousands of cosmetic products and non-cosmetic products. SLS is a strong degreaser that dries the skin and hair. It can also cause hair loss. Used in many products that are called natural as a result these products are not natural. This product is found in shampoos, toothpastes, lotions, and creams. It is also found in many car washes, engine degreasers, and garage floor cleaners. When combined Triethanolamine (TEA) it can become a nitrosamine, which is a potent class of carcinogen.

• Mineral Oil, Paraffin, and Petrolatum - Are hydrocarbons which come from petroleum products. On the skin, it is heavy and greasy and clogs pores. It is toxic and leads to skin issues. It disrupts natural skin grown causing skin aging. It is also suspected cause of cancer and disrupts hormonal activity. If take internally, it prevents the absorption of nutrient into the blood in the small intestines.

• Phenol carbolic acid, Phenolic compounds - Are used as a preservative and found in many lotions and skin creams. They are toxic and can cause paralysis, convulsions, coma and even death from respiratory failure.

• Benzoic Acid, sodium benzoate - is used as a preservative in cosmetics and foods. Often combined with sodium bisulfites, which are banned in some countries. This is a dangerous additive, since in low amounts it has been associated with brain damage, neurological disorders, and cancer.

• Dioxane PEG, Polysorbates, Laureth, ethoxylated alcohols - Found in many cosmetics and other personal care products. It is easily absorbed through the skin and has been found to be carcinogenic.

• BHA and BHT - Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene. These chemicals are synthetic antioxidants used in foods and cosmetics. Please avoid them, since they are toxic and may contain toluene which quite toxic.

There are hundreds of other chemicals you should know about so that you can avoid them in the products you use. Want soft hands.???Then try this one...


  • Take 2 tbls. sugar, baby oil and liquid soap. Pour sugar and baby oil, enough to cover hands in the palm of your hand. Rub hands together, as you would rub when you apply a lotion. Do this for a few minutes, then pour on a little liquid soap and wash clean. Your hands will feel very smooth.
  • Rub one spoon of sugar, lemon juice and fresh cream into your hands till the sugar completely dissolves. This will surely be of some help.
  • Mix 1/2 cup of warm milk, 2 tsp sugar, 2 tsp plain yogurt and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Soak your hands in this mix for about 5 minutes. Scrub your hands gently and do a massage.
  • Solution made of salt and lemon also slough off dead skin cells. Brush the solution with an old toothbrush. Do this twice a week. This method will not only give you soft hands but also remove discoloration.
  • The easiest method would be to apply a rich hand cream or petroleum jelly (Vaseline or generic) at night and wear gloves over them while you sleep. This locks the moisture in. Waken with softer hands.
  • If your hands become rough after a hard day gardening, pour a small amount of salt in the palm of one hand, then apply olive oil and rub hands together. Rinse off under warm water. Next, cover your hands with cotton gloves. This will work well for feet too.
  • For chapped winter hands: Grind 1 cup of uncooked rolled oats in a mixer until you have very fine powder. Place it in a large bowl, and then rub your hands in the powder gently. This will remove dry skin. Rinse with cold water and apply any hand cream. This treatment is cheaper then the expensive hand cream and yes, it does work better.
  • Hands become rough while you wash your dishes. Do not worry for there is a remedy even for this. Add a little almond oil to dishwater. The water will soften rough skin while the oil seals the moisture. Spraying your hands with a mist of vinegar after the wash will also be of some help.
  • To remove cooking smell from your hands. First rinse them with vinegar and then wash thoroughly with soap and water.
  • A quick massage of 10 minutes with olive oil or dove lotion will also work wonders.

Cleansing is a critical daily skin care step. It removes the dust and dirt that congest the pores on the skin. to do this 2-3 times a day is adequate for normal skins. But, for oily skin type a more frequent cleaning is very essential even 4-5 times a day. To prevent the transfer of bacteria to your face; always wash your hands first. Soap and water do cultivate to remove the impurities but are incapable of removing make up completely, hence proper cleansing is Required. There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing- creams, milks, lotions, foams, oils, gels and liquids. Depending on whether your skin is normal to oily or normal to dry, you should use cleansers and products that are formulated for your specific skin type.


Wash face using a gentle cleanser, with fingers, moving in a circular motion. A cotton pad dipped in fresh milk is a cheap but equally effective cleanser. Upwards and outwards movements have frequently been suggested as the right way to apply all kinds of creams to the face. Leave the cleanser on for a minute or two so as to loosen the dirt and make-up.
